Over my 3 decades of work as a medical practitioner and a weight loss surgeon, I have realised that the topic of weight maintenance cannot be given due justice unless we approach the “whole person”.
The more we focus on calories and food – yes, you heard me right! – the more it triggers the stress response.
We fret and worry about every ounce of food we eat.
We triple check the ingredients.
How much sugar?
Is it fat free?
Cut out carbs?
(Who ever even created carbs?)
Try a new diet.
Check the reviews.
And … weigh ourselves everyday.
However, the challenge is not Weight Loss…
The Real Challenge is Weight Maintenance!
As I was working year after year, with hundreds of patients who were seeing me every year for weight loss, I realised that many of them had experienced weight loss previously. They were just not able to maintain their weight loss.
I knew that unless we provide our clients with weight maintenance strategies we would be missing the point here by a mile.
While diets, surgery and pills have their place, if we did not approach the challenge of weight maintenance from a holistic – “Whole Person” perspective we would never achieve lasting success.
After having interviewed several hundreds of my patients, I spent the next 18 months refining a holistic program. I could see there were common patterns. Patterns of behaviours that were not serving them.
Also, patients were mostly drowning themselves in “information overload”. Too much information from Dr Google and social media, that was only causing more anxiety!
Keeping all these concerns and challenges that my clients face in mind allowed me to come up with a program in partnership with a wellness coach and quantum physicist:

‘Simplicity is profound’
Losing weight does not have to be an overly complicated task. I started working on strategies presented in my earlier book “Happy Gut, Healthy Weight” to come up with a simplified way of not only losing weight, but feeling more energy, more vitality, and hence more creativity, confidence, and more efficiency.
I truly believe that losing weight is a by-product of following a common sense approach to eating— eating right. But there is a thin line between simplicity and over-simplification. And just like you do with generalisations, you miss the point completely when you oversimplify. Eating a balanced diet will keep you healthy: a simple statement of fact. The less we eat, the thinner we become: an oversimplification.
Besides simplifying your food, this programme helps you bring a Holistic – a Whole Person view on habits and behaviours that would be hurting you. There could be triggers in your environment, mind or your daily routines that could be causing you to engage in these unfavourable behaviours.

Regardless of whether we chose to blame our external environment, COVID lock down, job loss or that stressful relationship, we are ultimately responsible for our actions. And that ‘responsibility’ is literally our ‘ability’ to ‘respond’.

Dr Arun Dhir is a Gastrointestinal surgeon and has practised his craft for over three decades. He is a Monash University lecturer, researcher and author of two books. He is also a Yoga and meditation teacher registered with Yoga Australia. He is a thought leader in the area of Mind-Body Connection, Weight Management and Gut health.
